Number System – An Introduction

Number system is a set of values used to represent different quantities.

 Types of Number Systems:

Decimal Number System

Binary Number System

Octal Number System

Hexadecimal Number system

1.  Decimal Number System:

There are 10 digits in decimal number system. These digits from 0 to 9 are used to represent a number or quantity. For example : if we add 5 or 7 then the result is 12 which is a combination of 1 and  2.

* A digit in Binary Number system is called bit.   

2. Binary Number System:

Binary Number system uses only two digits 0 and 1. Binary Number System is used widely in computers. As we know that Decimal Number System has 10 digits from 0 to 9. It is called Base10 System.  As it is Binary Number System has 2 digits 0 and 1. It is called Base 2 System.

Conversion:

Changing numbers from Binary to Decimal and Decimal to Binary called conversion.

For example : Change the Binary digit 10101 into Decimal Digit.
